  • It Can’t Be SuMmEr Without….

a wildfire. This fire started about 8 miles outside of our town and the winds have been whipping it toward the north, away from town. We have a lot of friends with homes very close to the burning area and thankfully, no homes have burned. We’ve seen quite a bit of air support and great ground support. Firefighters are amazing. So much can go wrong, yet they are well trained and work hard to see success. I couldn’t resist getting a few of my own photos; so many people have been out with their cameras to shoot the fire pictures. Tonight, I elected to stay home and get the last of the laundry done.
Things are happening around here. My mom has a definite stage 4 cancer diagnosis and has decided, calmly and with determination, to refuse any further tests and treatment. She is “done” with all that and simply wants to enjoy what time she has left. I do not have the heart to call the doctor and ask what the guesstimate on lifespan is now. What I am going to be doing, beginning tomorrow, is make her bucket list items happen. I have cried with her and laughed with her and I have been very stoic at times…like a soldier. This is just so hard, yet I have experienced comfort and peace and strength. God is with us.

  • That’s a pretty spooky photo, Gail — I’m glad it began by going away from town, as that will make it easier to protect the town, but it’s hard knowing that you have friends in the fire’s path. Do your winds stay relatively steady, or do they change directions with the time of day as they do here?

So sorry about your mom.   Your plan to help her get the bucket list things done is a good one — it will keep you busy, and keep her mind occupied.  Know that you are loved through all that is to come!

  • @slmret - The winds do shift a little, but thankfully, they have maintained a mostly north direction. If they shift to south or east or directly west, we’re in big trouble. Thank you for the love! Makes me miss you more! I sure could use a Janet hug!

  • agree with janet, make the most of each moment. your mom has the right idea and so do you–prayers for you and your family–karen

  • I know that God will continue to be with you.  Praying for you and your mom.

  • My mom died suddenly, but my experience with my dad’s cancer was similar. I understand the tears and the being stoic. Praying.

  • So sorry about your mom, but I can imagine her relief in her decision.  Warm thoughts and prayers as you walk beside her.  I so admire ANYONE standing by their parents through the aging/sickness process.  My parents did intensive care of my grandparents and there is nothing in my heart but admiration for them.  Sorry about the fires!!  That’s so scary.  Glad everyone is ok, but the devastation is so hard to accept.  Love to you, Gail.

  • so sorry about your mom

it looks like the fire is close to you.

hope you know that God is with you and would never leave you.

  • Sorry about your mom     Like that you are working on her bucket list!

  • ~~Aww, Gail girl!!  Sorry to hear your Mom’s news.  I understand her decision, I’m glad she has peace!  May your entire family enjoy the happy memories you’ll be making with her!!

One of the things that fascinate me about flying cross country, is seeing fires burning from way up in the sky.  I am always amazed that you can see them from the airplane.  They are usually very large, very destructive.

Many prayers for you and your family!

  • You and your mom are in my prayers, Gail. This is the sad part of life—watching loved ones slip away from this life.  She has made the right tough decision. I have tried to learn from a few of my friends who passed away and went through many surgeries and chemo, suffered, and then died during the process. I understand the desire to live, and it is tough.

I was touched with you attitude–a bucket list.
Loved your photos of course and happy your house is not in danger.
    blessings
    frank
